Remember what Grandma used to say? Wear your scarf, put your gloves on, cover your feet you'll catch a chill... (don't you just love Grandma)!
Well it turns out that Grandma was right all along. In Chinese medicine we believe the neck is very vulnerable to the cold and it is super important to keep it covered and protected during these winter months. The same applies to your midriff and your feet. We can indeed catch colds and chills by exposure to cold.
So, in the words of Grandma, get out those woolies!!!

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER?
One of my patients said to me only this morning that they were feeling 'out of sorts' and a bit sluggish. This is not uncommon during this time of seasonal change and in Western medicine is termed Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It can strike as we move into the autumn and winter months and result in symptoms ranging from feeling out of sorts to very real depression.
Chinese medicine has long recognised this phenomenon and we can use specific acupuncture points to help smooth the seasonal transformation, helping you to feel better in yourself, more settled and less fatigued.

At this time of year, as we move into cooler weather I am beginning to talk to my patients about warming their foods. Cold foods strain your digestive system, especially when it is also cold outside. So do your body a favour and switch from salads to stews and sandwiches to soups. This is super important if you feel the cold: warm yourself from the inside out!

Light and dark, same plant!

This reminded me of Yin and Yang. ☯️

The opposing forces of Yin (moon, water, dark) and Yang (sun, fire, light) can be found all over our natural world and also within ourselves. As acupuncturists we seek to balance Yin and Yang because it is this balance that results in harmony and wellbeing. Imbalance can result in dis-ease and ill health.
